Embracing creativity

Experimentation allows you to discover different styles and perspectives, adding depth and variety to your work. It encourages you to see the world through a fresh lens, opening up endless possibilities for artistic expression.

Experimenting in photography offers a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of your creativity. By trying new techniques and stepping out of your comfort zone, you can create images that are innovative and captivating.

Tips for experimenting with your photography:

  • Try new genres: If you're accustomed to landscape photography, try portraiture or street photography to broaden your skills.
  • Play with shutter speed: Use long exposures for motion blur effects or fast shutter speeds to freeze action.
  • Experiment with lighting: Use artificial light sources like flash or LED lights to create different moods and effects.
  • Alter perspectives: Change your viewpoint by shooting from high angles, low angles, or unconventional positions.
  • Use creative filters and lenses: Try using a fisheye lens, macro lens, or coloured filters to add unique elements to your images.
  • Incorporate post-processing techniques: Explore editing software to experiment with colour grading, double exposures, or other effects.

Let's inspire each other to push the creative boundaries and discover new possibilities in the art of photography.

By Sandy McCleary. I wanted to try and create an ethereal looking image for this weeks challenge. I used a thin blue plastic bag with a tear in it over my lens, moving it around a bit to suit. I lit a couple of incense sticks for the smoky effect and placed them in various positions until I got the right spot. Taken handheld with my 90mm macro lens, ISO 100, f4,1/50 on a medium burst mode.

By Kelvin Wright. Drops of water on a CD. I used a macro lens and put the camera on a tripod. Manual focus because focus was hard to acquire on auto. Small aperture, and stacked focus (8 images). Lighting was sunlight through a window.

By Mike Milsom. I was experimenting with an empty crystal decanter back lit with a red light to see how the light dispersed through the glass.

By Stephen Garner. Experimenting with glass spheres today.

By Joy Tracey. Experimenting with a prism in the shade, no direct sun and a breeze. Angled to get multiple reflections.

By Ann Kilpatrick. I discovered this by accident on my camera. I was trying to alter the colour of my focus peaking, I hit the wrong button and the live view showed this negative perspective, so I found this. Shot with my camera on a tripod, 105mm lens, Lightbox.
